Heart disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States, claiming more lives than all cancers combined. Heart disease is also taking a toll on Oklahoma. But the evidence is clear—we can reduce the threat by applying the ABCS of cardiovascular disease prevention: Aspirin use by high-risk individuals, Blood pressure control, Cholesterol management, and Smoking cessation.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) new grant initiative, EvidenceNOW: Advancing Heart Health in Primary Care looks to help primary care practices use the latest research in cardiovascular disease prevention. We’re pleased to be a part of this network of seven regional cooperatives, composed of both public and private health partnerships and multidisciplinary teams of experts, operating in 12 States. Through EvidenceNOW, we’re providing resources and support services to help smaller primary care practices with fewer resources apply the latest medical evidence to improve heart health. These support services include Practice Faciliators, Academic Detailers, and Health Information Technology support to improve their quality improvement efforts. In addition, participating EvidenceNOW physicians who are board certified in internal medicine, family medicine, or one of 18 other specialties of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member boards can receive maintenance of certification credit for engagement in this effort.

This initiative also includes an independent evaluation to identify the most effective ways of implementing the best medical evidence to advance heart health. By participating in EvidenceNOW, practices will help create a new blueprint for how all of America’s primary care practices can improve patient heart health in their communities.
